What are inalys and onlays used for?

Dental inlays and onlays function and look exactly like natural teeth. They provide a strong and durable solution where back teeth have decayed, broken or been fractured. If a tooth has too much damage to be repaired by a white filling but doesn’t require a dental crown, it can be sensitively repaired by an inlay or onlay.

If a cavity has appeared between the cusps of your back tooth, your dentist might suggest a dental inlay, whilst teeth that have acquired damage to one or more of the cusps, they may require an onlay. The composite or ceramic materials that make up inlays and onlays are strong and durable, and can strengthen the weakened surfaces of the tooth. Dental inlays and onlays are also more aesthetically pleasing than regular fillings as they provide a more natural looking solution.

Inlays and onlays are sometimes known as partial crowns and offer stability and durability to teeth that have lost some of their strength. Once your inlays or onlays have been fitted, you will be able to enjoy your smile again.

The placement of inlays or onlays usually requires two appointments. Your dentist will prepare your damaged tooth during the first appointment and then take a precise impression from it. Professional dental technicians will use this impression to create an inlay or onlay with an exact fit. Once your dental inlay or dental onlay is ready, your dentist will fit it and bond it to your damaged tooth, during your second appointment. This tooth will then be strong enough to be polished and give you back your natural and healthy smile.
